How to open an EML file online

Received an .eml file and don’t know how to open it? You can read it here without Outlook or importing it into Gmail. The same steps work for Outlook .msg files.

  1. Drag your EML or MSG file into the viewer, or select Choose files.
  2. Select a message to read its contents, sender, recipients, and date.
  3. Download an attachment, inspect the headers, or use the download menu to save the message.

How to convert an EML file to PDF

Need a readable copy to share or keep for your records? Convert an EML or MSG message to PDF directly from the viewer, without uploading it.

  1. Open your .eml or .msg file and select the message you want to save.
  2. Open the download menu above the message and choose Convert to PDF.
  3. In the print dialog, choose Save as PDF or your device’s PDF option, then save the file.

The PDF includes the subject, sender, recipients, date, and simplified HTML body, or plain text when HTML is unavailable. Long messages can span multiple pages. Attachment names are listed, but their files are not embedded in the PDF; download them separately from the viewer. PDF options depend on your browser and device.

How to save an email as an EML or MSG file

Already have a file? Open it above. If you need to save a message from your inbox first, follow the steps for your email app.

Export an email from Gmail

Follow Gmail’s official instructions to download an individual message as an .eml file:

  1. On a computer, open Gmail and the message you want to save.
  2. Choose More (the three-dot menu), then Download message.
  3. Open the downloaded .eml file in this viewer.

Export an email from Outlook

Use the path for your version in Microsoft’s message-saving guide:

  • New Outlook for Windows: Open the message, choose More actions, then Save as, choose a folder, and select Save.
  • Outlook on the web or Outlook.com: Open the message, choose More actions, then Download.

Classic Outlook can save messages as .msg files. Open them directly here, alongside .eml files—no conversion needed.

What is an EML file?

An EML file is a saved copy of a single email message. It follows the standard format used for internet email, so the file can contain sender and recipient addresses, a subject and date, delivery and authentication headers, plain-text or HTML content, and file attachments.

Mail apps and support tools often create EML files when you save or export a message. Opening the file is useful when you need to read an archived email, inspect how it was constructed, or retrieve an attachment without importing the message into a mailbox.

What the EML reader shows

Switch between plain text and simplified HTML to read the message body. The sender, recipients, subject, and date appear above it. Attached files are listed below the message, with a Download button for each file.

Use the download menu to save the plain text or original HTML for editing, including its template styling. The download preserves external image references; it does not bundle the images or attachments.

Expand All headers to inspect stored fields such as Content-Type, Message-ID, routing information, and authentication results. For EML files, Raw source also shows the original message source.

Is it safe to open an EML file?

Parsing happens on your device, one selected message at a time. Mailactor does not receive the files, filenames, message content, addresses, or attachment details, and the preview does not request remote email content. No account is required.

The preview and PDF remove scripts, remote images, forms, and active styling, so an HTML email may look simpler than the original. The viewer does not scan for malware, verify the sender, or independently check SPF, DKIM, or DMARC. Downloaded attachments and original HTML are not sanitized; only open them if you trust their source.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between EML and MSG?

EML is a standard internet email format used by many mail apps. MSG is an Outlook-specific format that can also store Outlook properties. You can open either format here without converting it first.

What is the file size limit?

You can queue up to 10 EML or MSG files, each up to 10 MB and 25 MB total. If a file or batch exceeds these limits, choose fewer files or a smaller export.

Why won’t my EML or MSG file open?

Check that the file is a complete email export, rather than a different file renamed to .eml or .msg. Encrypted messages, Outlook RTF-only bodies, proprietary TNEF content, severely malformed files, and unusually deep MIME structures may require the original email app. Try exporting the message again if it appears incomplete.

Can I combine several emails into one PDF?

No. PDF conversion works on one selected message at a time. You can keep several files in the queue and save each separately, but the viewer does not merge them into one PDF.

Can I edit a message or convert EML to MSG?

The viewer does not edit email files or convert between EML and MSG. You can save the message as PDF, HTML, or plain text; mailbox formats such as PST are not supported.

Does saving a PDF change my original email file?

No. Your original file stays unchanged. Keep the EML or MSG file if you need to reopen the email in a mail app or retain its full source. The PDF is a readable copy for sharing or reference.
